Charith Fernando is a Research Engineer in the Mixed Reality Lab at the National University of Singapore. He received his B.Sc. honors degree in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka in 2007 and was a temporary lecturer at the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering before he joined the Lab.

Charith’s research interests include human computer interaction, soft intelligent robotics, embedded electronics, personal area networking and digital signal processing. He has carried out many projects in these areas during his undergraduate studies in Sri Lanka and published papers at internationally recognized conferences. He is also interested in computer hardware, network management and worked as a student network administrator for 4 years at University of Moratuwa. Charith joined the Mixed Reality Lab in 2006 as a visiting intern researcher as a part of  his degree program at the University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka. During his internship period he worked on “Age Invaders” and “Metazoa Ludens” projects.

Charith has designed an autonomous map building robot during his undergraduate studies at University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka which can be used for terrain mapping by exploring an area according to a pre defined algorithm. The autonomous control of the robot movement is optimized and a terrain map is transmitted to a PC for a real time display of the map building process. Charith has recently managed to secure distinguished GENIUS MEDAL of Hungarian republic and theSILVER MEDAL at the 36th International Exhibition of Inventions 2008, which was held at Geneva Palexpo (Hall 7) in Switzerland from 2nd to 6th April 2008 for his final year undergraduate project: “Sensor based motion tracking system for Human-Computer interaction”.
