Own Noel Newton Fernando

Owen Noel Newton Fernando is a Research Fellow in the Mixed Reality Lab. at the National University of Singapore. He received his B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, and M.Sc. & Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Aizu, Japan. He has previously worked at the Peoples Bank (leading government bank in Sri Lanaka) IT department as a Systems Analyst.

His research interests are human-computer interaction, entertainment computing, mixed & virtual reality, mobile computing, ambient information, multimodal interfaces, multimedia communication, and cultural computing. His research have been accepted and published by prestigious conferences (i.e. MobileHCI: the premier mobile conference and CIT: IEEE Conf. on Computer and Information Technology) and highly esteemed journals (i.e. MIT Press’ journal “Presence” and Oxford Press’ journal “IEICE Trans. on Information and Systems”). He is an invited reviewer for several conferences and journals, including ICEC, MobileHCI, and AHCI. He is also a Guest Editor of the Advances in Human Computer Interaction (Issue on Interactive Play and Learning for Children).

At the Mixed Reality Lab, he is contributing to several projects which are concentrating on introducing some innovative modes of Interactive and Digital Media including, new approaches in communication among different cultures, ethnic groups, and between humans and machines. He is functioning as a co-supervisor of several research projects in the Mixed Reality Lab and supervising the students in their research projects. He is also a coordinator of the combined research projects instigate by the MXR Lab with the collaboration of the universities in both Sri Lanka and Japan. Presently, he is an invited research fellow in Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies at Kyoto University where he leads NICT (National Institute of Information and Communication Technology) Cultural Computing Project under the supervision of Prof. Naoko Tosa.
