Crafting the Mobile Experience |
Tutorial Description |
The tutorial is based on the latest research and development of mobile services at one of the mobile industry's largest company. Its content has been developed and refined by the instructors based on experience gained over a period of several years while they have been employed in the telecom industry. The tutorial was first given at MobileHCI’06 and subsequently at NordiCHI’06. The MobileHCI’07 version is updated with the latest research and development of mobile entertainment and communication services.
Tutorial participants will get a deep insight into the issues that surround the development of mobile services and how to approach these from an interaction design point of view. The main elements taught by the tutorial are:
- An understanding of what ‘mobile’ means when developing mobile services
- Mobile design consideration for users, tasks and content
- An improved ability to make user interface more easy/fun/quick-to-use
- Tips and techniques for designing useful and usable services specifically for use in a mobile environment
- Effective use of restricted screen space and minimalist input devices
- Design of services that are tailored to the individual
- Practical design experience through group exercises

The Heuristic Evaluation Method for Mobile Games |
Tutorial Description |
This is a full-day tutorial proposal for MobileHCI 2007 conference. The participants of this tutorial will learn to use a heuristic model for evaluating games.
The difficulty level of the tutorial is intermediate. It is helpful if the participants are at least familiar with the heuristic evaluation method and have played games. Lectures in the morning session give a good introduction for those who are not familiar with evaluating games. The tutorial is designed for approximately 20 participants, but the design is flexible if there will be more or less participants than that.
The purpose of this tutorial is to teach the participants how to conduct heuristic evaluations for games. The tutorial consists of lectures and group exercises. The lectures provide the knowledge that is needed to carry out the group exercises. |

3D Graphics on Mobile Device and Multimodal Interaction |
Tutorial Description |
This tutorial addresses issues of 3D graphics used for mobile devices and multimodal interaction. Among main topics we deal with here are general concept and multimodal interaction of 3D contents on mobile devices, 3D content sharing and adaptation for multiple devices and heterogeneous networks, and personalized interfaces for mobile users.
With the emergence and prevalence of ubiquitous computing environments as a new computing paradigm, users want to experience different multimedia services (video, audio, text, etc.) anywhere at anytime. For this kind of mobile computing environment, however, we overlook 3D contents which are another promising way of making services more attractive.
The aim of the tutorial is to provide knowledge and approaches which lead some challenging issues of 3D graphics when it is used for mobile devices and multimodal interaction. What we focus here is how to enable users with various mobile devices which have limited capacities in terms of computing power, storage, and network bandwidth to interact with 3D contents. As an example of interaction, we provide multimodal interaction methods using haptic interfaces with which users can perceive, touch, and feel contents in a virtual environment. |

Mobile Online Game Development with the Multi-User Publishing Environment Application Platform |
Tutorial Description |
Tutorial on Mobile Online Game Development with the Multi-User Publishing Environment Application Platform is a full-day workshop in MobileHCI 2007 (9th of September in Singapore). In this tutorial, participants learn to create multiplayer online context-aware mobile games. The tutorial consists of lectures, design and implementation.
The lectures teach how to implement games with the MUPE platform and give a very brief introduction to designing mobile games. After the lectures, the participants form groups and design and implement their own game using some or all of the following technologies: social proximity, photos and location. There will be three tutors available for the whole day.
At the end of the tutorial, the participants will have a functional game or a game demo that they can take home with them. The participants should have programming skills or UI design skills. |

Handheld Usability: Design, Prototyping, & Usability Testing for Mobile Phones |
Tutorial Description |
This tutorial teaches UI design, prototyping, and usability strategies for mobile phones. Hardware UI, operating environments, and wireless networking will be presented.
Information architecture, paper prototyping, and usability testing of phones will be taught with team exercises. SMS/MMS, WAP, FlashLite, SVGt 1.2, and Java will be overviewed.
The goal is to present challenges and strategies for designing user interfaces for handheld devices. A brief introduction to types of handheld devices and operating environments will set the stage for a more in-depth discussion and hands-on learning activities centered on design & information architecture, paper prototyping, and user testing. Exercises will focus on applying the skills and strategies learned to design a user interface for a mobile telephone handset. |

Tutorials offer MobileHCI participants opportunities to learn about mobile HCI concepts, methods and techniques from recognised experts. Introductory tutorials help newcomers to get acquainted in the mobile HCI area whereas advanced tutorials provide in-depth knowledge to professionals already familiar with the basics.
The tutorials can introduce new human-centred design practices, such as design guidelines, design methodologies, or evaluation approaches and methodologies. The tutorials can also give overviews of current state-of-art in different mobile technologies, applications and services or user interface paradigms. Participatory approaches are recommended, so that tutorial participants can learn by doing themselves.
About Tutorials
Tutorials will be held parallel to the workshops on 9th September 2007. Both one-day and half-day tutorials can be organised, and the tutorials can be introductory, intermediate or advanced, depending on the targeted audience. Tutorials will be selected on the basis of the relevance, timeliness and audience appeal of the subject. Other evaluation criteria include the quality of the proposal, the expected benefits to the participants and fit within the overall programme. Also the suitability for presentation in a half-day or full-day format, use of appropriate presentation methods and exercises and past experience and qualifications of the instructors will be taken into account. Tutorials that advocate a single avenue of research or promote a product will NOT be considered. |
